Understanding the Sapa Background: A Rich Cultural Heritage
3-Day / 2-Night Sapa Backpacking Trek
Day 1: Sapa – Sa Seng – Hang Da – Lao Chai – Ta Van – Seo My Ty – Giang Ta Chai
This Sapa backpacking route is one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in the region. You will experience two very different landscapes: high mountains and wide rice-paddy valleys.
The trek lasts 7–9 hours and covers approximately 15–16 km. The trail can be slippery during or after rain, making it ideal for adventurous backpackers.
You start trekking from Sapa to Sa Seng village, then hike uphill toward Dragon Mountain. On clear days, you can enjoy panoramic views of Fansipan Peak, Sapa town, Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai, Ma Tra, and Ta Phin villages. After descending, lunch is served in Hang Da or Lao Chai village.
In the afternoon, you continue trekking through Lao Chai and Ta Van valleys, famous for their stunning rice terraces. Lao Chai is home to over 3,000 Hmong people. The day ends with an overnight homestay in Ta Van village with a Zay or Hmong family.
Day 2: Ta Van – Seo My Ty Village
After breakfast, you hike uphill to Seo My Ty village, one of the highest and most remote villages in Sapa. On clear days, you can see Sapa town from the mountain top.
Lunch is prepared in a Hmong family’s house, where you can enjoy traditional local food. After lunch, you trek downhill back to the same homestay. The total distance is about 9–10 km.
Day 3: Ta Van – Bamboo Forest – Waterfall – Giang Ta Chai – Sapa
On the final day, you trek along small village paths through a bamboo forest and past a waterfall to Giang Ta Chai village, home to the Red Dao ethnic minority.
This trek is 7–9 km and takes around 3–4 hours. After lunch at a local restaurant, a car picks you up and transfers you back to Sapa town.
